Aage Niels Bohr

Aage N. Bohr was born in Copenhagen, the capitol of Denmark, on the night of June 19, 1922. He was one of the six sons of Niels and Margrethe Bohr. His father, Niels Bohr, was a famous physicist, and had a great influence on his life.

Aage Bohr graduated from his first 12 years of school from Sortedam Gymnasium. Afterwards he furthered his education by studying physics in 1940 at the University of Copenhagen. During his college education, he began to assist his father in his own works of physics. It was then that Aage became interested in nuclear physics. In 1946 he received a master's degree and became a nuclear physicist.

Aage Bohr is known for his discovery that the motion of subatomic particles can change the shape of the nucleus. This discovery disagreed with the famous theory that all nuclei are perfectly shaped. His discovery also was greatly important for the development of nuclear fusion. In 1975, Aage Bohr proudly shared the Nobel Prize for Physics with the influential Mottleson and Rainwater for their achievements on the shapes of atomic nuclei.

Aage Bohr was married to Marietta on March of 1950 in the city of New York. Together they had three children. Their names were Vilhelm, Tomas, and Margethe. Bohr mentions that he enjoys playing the piano with his wife while she plays the flute. He also says that “The personal friendships that have grown out of scientific contacts with colleagues from many countries have been an important part of my life.
